Review of OBS CUBE-X Box Mod

Review of OBS CUBE-X Box Mod

Today’s review is dedicated to the new battery unit from one of the oldest Chinese manufacturers – CUBE-X Mod from OBS.

OBS CUBE-X Packaging

The OBS Company, as is customary for many modern manufacturers, and especially those famous for producing atomizers, can supply its new CUBE-X mod both separately and in a set with a CUBE X Tank on replaceable evaporators with a mesh. I got my hands on a separate mod, which arrived in a fairly large yellow box. On the drain, which also serves as the lid of the package, you can find the manufacturer’s logo, a couple of pictograms telling about the most important advantages of your purchase, and an image of the device in the Lost Temple color scheme. You need to look for a mark about the real color of your purchase on the back side, but, as it turned out, this is not necessarily the case. According to the mug pasted opposite the Bloody Mary inscription, there should have been a mod with red panels inside, but for some reason the mod turned out to have green ones – Firefly (or, as it is written on the box – Firefiles), for which “thanks” to the manufacturer’s assembler. On the left side you can find a sticker with an erasable code and an originality check, which must be carried out on the OBS website.

Inside the box, in addition to a desiccant bag, the device itself and a fairly thick half-meter micro USB cable, there was an instruction manual in as many as seven languages, among which, unfortunately, there was no Russian translation. e-cigarettes online boutique in canada But, looking ahead, it should be said that the instruction manual is practically not needed here, since it does not contain either a clear description of the characteristics or even a decoding of what is hidden behind the Protection icon.

Appearance and design of OBS CUBE-X

If there is a form of the device that is a transitional form between tube mods and box mods, then it is right in front of us. On the one hand, it is clearly a bar with a square section, and on the other, it is rounded so much that just a little more, and it would already be a pipe. CUBE-X is already the third in the series of “cubes” from the Chinese OBS, the first two (one CUBE Mini, the second CUBE, included in the CUBE MTL Kit and CUBE Kit bundles) used built-in power supplies. Now the engineers have used their brains, slightly increased the case and gave us the opportunity to use our own 18650 batteries, without being tied to a socket. Starting from the second version, CUBE acquired a screen and control buttons, which the developers placed on two adjacent sides of the device.

The body of the device is made of aluminum alloy (there is a slight suspicion that the paint will not last long, but this is just a guess) and consists of two halves, on the edges there are plastic inserts with prints, which OBS calls nothing less than Fashion Pattern. All the walls of the new device are sealed with protective films, on one of the sides there was also a place for the unobtrusively inscribed name of the mod.

Colors of the OBS Cube X Kit

Along with the complete atomizer, the company releases eight color options for the CUBE-X Mod (in the tanks, the differences are mostly only in the drip tips), five of them with rather poetic names: Rainbow Candy, Lost Temple, Firefly, Bloody Mary, Ink, Black, Gunmetal and Chrome.

OBS CUBE-X Screen and Control

When the battery is installed (correctly!), after a short splash screen with the OBS logo is displayed, the device immediately starts up, turns off and turns on with a standard five-time press on Fire, nothing unusual awaits us here. One side of the device is given exclusively to the screen, the controls and the micro USB connector are located to the right. The display itself has a diagonal of 0.96 “and displays quite a lot of information at the same time: for some reason, the operating mode (it is the only one here), a graphical display of the battery charge, the set power, winding resistance, supplied voltage, the number of puffs and a timer.

OBS CUBE-X Mod Buttons

The Fire button is made of metal, has a fairly large size (∅16.5 mm) and a small stroke, it is pressed with a clear dull click. It is difficult to miss it, but sometimes creaking and barely noticeable jamming slightly spoil the overall impression. The control buttons are also round and have a nice radial pattern, much smaller (∅7.5 mm), and are pressed a little louder. When shaking, nothing dangles or rattles, and if it weren’t for the Fire, the assembly could be called ideal.

Impressions

If we consider the CUBE-X as a “device in itself”, i.e. the result of the evolution of the entire CUBE series, then the device is definitely very good: a convenient shape, attractive design, simple controls. What the first CUBE Mini has grown into, which was in its own right just a large e-cigarette of an unusual shape with a good (1500 mAh) battery, having received an increased volume, screen and controls in the CUBE MOD, can now rightfully be called a mod. On the other hand, considering any device separately from the rest of the vaping market would not be entirely fair, and this is exactly where OBS is not doing well. To begin with, I can attribute the very meager functionality of the board to the disadvantages (or complaints, call it what you want). Today, a device does not need to be the size of a Reuleaux to have any other modes besides variable wattage. Many manufacturers manage to cram all sorts of temperature controls and graphs into the filling, releasing still compact devices. And here, with a fairly large screen, the manufacturer was either greedy or too lazy to add a couple of extra functions. On the other hand, all these modes are needed by a small circle of users and can only confuse an ordinary vaper, so you can find a plus in this. But power adjustments of only 1 W are not enough for me personally. When using a cigarette tank, I really want to have either a change step of 0.1 W at least up to 20 W, or the good old variable volt mode as an alternative. But perhaps I am grumbling in vain here, and OBS has nevertheless built in the ability to update the firmware and will release a fresh version of the software, where all this will be in full. But the support of resistance of only 0.1 Ohm is unlikely to be corrected by updating the software. However, it is also needed by few and not so long ago such a lower threshold did not bother anyone. Although in the mod released in 2019, it also looks sad. In general, we love and appreciate OBS, but still primarily for interesting tanks. Otherwise, the device is perfect for just vaping and pleasing its owner with its appearance, excellent ergonomics and slightly pot-bellied shape. The main thing is that the assemblers put in the box exactly the color you chose.
